Frequently Asked Questions

What video formats does MrEncode read?

Any video format AVFoundation supports — ProRes (422 and 4444), HEVC, H.264, MP4, M4V, MOV containers with most common codecs. If QuickTime Player can open it, MrEncode can read it.

 

What does MrEncode output?

HEVC (4:2:0 and 4:2:2, both Main and Main 10), H.264, ProRes 422 (Proxy, LT, Standard, HQ). Outputs are written to .mov or .mp4 containers — your choice per encode. ProRes outputs are always .mov (the only container that supports ProRes); HEVC and H.264 work in either.

 

What is No Recompression mode?

A fast metadata-only rewrite that preserves the original video stream byte-for-byte while allowing edits to color tags (NCLC), timecode, and container metadata. Use it to conform mistagged Rec.601 files to Rec.709, or to fix metadata without re-encoding the video.

 

How accurate are the size and time estimates?

Estimates sharpen with use — MrEncode tracks your past encodes and uses that history to refine size and time predictions for similar future jobs. First encode estimates are based on general heuristics; subsequent estimates improve as MrEncode learns your typical sources and presets.

 

Can I share presets between Macs?

Yes. Presets are saved as .mrepreset files that you can email, AirDrop, or store in a shared folder. Double-click a .mrepreset to load it as a temporary preset, or use Import to add it permanently to your preset library.

 

Does MrEncode connect to the internet?

No. MrEncode runs entirely on-device with no network calls. No analytics, no telemetry, no online activation. Verify with Little Snitch, Lulu, or macOS Activity Monitor.

 

Where are my preferences and presets stored?

In the standard macOS sandboxed app container: ~/Library/Containers/com.grayrobot.mrencode/. Presets you've imported live in this container's Application Support folder.

 

Can I encode video with alpha channel?

Not in v1.0. Sources with alpha (e.g., ProRes 4444) are read fine and their alpha is composited over black during encoding to non-alpha output codecs. Support for alpha-preserving output codecs is being evaluated for a future release.

 

Is there a command-line version?

Not in the App Store release. A standalone CLI version for scripting and render farm integration is planned as a separate download from grayrobot.io.

 

Does MrEncode support HDR encoding?

Standard dynamic range workflows are fully supported. HDR support (HLG, PQ, Dolby Vision) is under evaluation for a future release.
